Hundreds of parents send letter to Trump urging him to keep Obama-era transgender student bathroom protections

Hundreds of parents across the country have sent a letter urging Trump to embrace Obama-era protections for transgender students.

In the letter, more than 780 parents stress that “all students deserve equal access to a safe, welcoming school and a high quality education no matter who they are”.

Revoking students’ rights to use the bathroom of their gender choice is wrong, said the letter.

These policies are wrong, they hurt our children, and they violate the principle of equal education.

The call follows a decision by the Trump administration to abandon a defense of the guidelines issued by the Obama administration, which call for schools to let students use bathrooms according to their gender identity.

Making another plea, advocates for LGBT rights sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, urging the same continuation of the bathroom guidelines.

“Transgender students are entitled to the full protection of the United States Constitution and our federal nondiscrimination laws. It is heartbreaking and wrong that the agency tasked with enforcing civil rights laws would instead work to subvert them for political interests. President Trump must immediately reverse course and direct the DOJ to uphold guidance protecting transgender students,’ said Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin in a statement.
