Australia’s lesbian finance minister announces birth of her baby

Penny Wong showed her newborn to the world yesterday. Baby Alexandra, weighing 7.1lbs, was conceived from a donor known to the couple, and carried by Wong’s partner. Her birth comes a week after Finance Minister Wong backed the Labor Party’s stance on marriage equality. While same-sex marriages have yet to be legalized, gay people throughout Australia have celebrated Labor’s support. And it has led to the resignation from the party of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s sister – Loree Rudd – who said she could not work for a party that endorsed gays marrying. Miss Wong said she had sent a text to Prime Minister Julia Gillard with the news and the Prime Minister had replied that she was delighted.
