QUESTION: My partner and I are beginning to research sperm labs, but we’re not sure what to look for in comparison. We know there’s testing involved, but does each sperm lab do the same thing to the “donations”?
DR. DOYLE: The actual testing done to do a simple semen analysis is pretty standard but the experience can definitely vary. For example, you might want to ask: how are on-site collections done? How private is the collection room? What specific “viewing materials” if any are available? Can your partner join you in the room? And can you skip the whole laboratory scene and bring the sample in from home? The whole thing is admittedly a bit strange so anything a lab can do to increase your comfort level is always nice.
