Houston’s ‘Freedom to Marry Day’

In a letter declaring Feb. 14, 2011 Freedom to Marry Day, Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker said Valentine’s Day is bittersweet and she hopes the day comes when she’ll be allowed to marry her life partner of 20 years.

According to a recent poll by Equality Texas, 63% of Texans now support allowing gay couples to get a civil union.

“It’s just a matter of time and I think it’s going to happen.” Rob Scamardo with Equality Texas says having Mayor Parker’s support will only help their cause. “Any time a public official takes a stance on an issue or topic like this I think people listen and, if they’re open-minded, will consider what that public official is saying,” Scamardo says.
