FIRED: Michigan official who wrote homophobic blog

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox fired assistant state attorney general Andrew Shirvell (pictured) who stands accused of harassing the student assembly president at the University of Michigan – who happens to be gay. Shirvell started his own troubles by posting a blog he wrote characterizing the U of M student leader Chris Armstrong as a “privileged pervert”, “racist”, and a “liar” who promoted a “radical homosexual agenda”.

National criticism erupted over the posting. In late September, Cox defended Shirvell’s authoring of a blog titled “Chris Armstrong Watch” that railed against the college senior and sociology major.

But in Monday’s announcement, Cox said he concluded that Shirvell’s dismissal was warranted due to actions “unbecoming a state employee” that went beyond the blog.
