Lesbian mom asked to quit PTA over Prop. 8

The San Jose Mercury News reports that a lesbian mother in Fresno says she was forced to resign from her position as president of the parent-teacher association at her son’s Catholic school after she spoke out against banning gay marriage.

Robin McGehee, who enrolled her son Sebastian at St. Helens Catholic School, says she went to a vigil for the “No on Proposition 8” campaign last Thursday. After that, a priest from the Diocese of Fresno told her to step down because she had gone against church teachings.

The PTA’s vice president, Tiffany Rodriquez, confirmed that McGehee was removed. Rodriquez herself resigned in protest of her removal.

The school directed inquiries to Rick Sexton of the Office of Catholic Education, who said he couldn’t discuss the issue due to privacy concerns.

why aren’t the churches thinking about the children? they say this whole thing is to protect families, but they are hurting our families!

Sadly, they don’t see it that way Amanda. They really believe they’re saving your children from you.

Since becoming a parent I’ve been shocked to see how little society cares about children. They pretend to care, but it’s all talk. The ones who pretend the most are often the ones who care the least: religious institutions, politicians, school boards…

How do street gangs even exist in a caring society? Children can go on the internet and learn how to make a bomb, but they can’t spell or do simple arithmetic. How are schools allowed to be run-down and unsafe? In a society that cared, they would be treated like shrines.

The church protests our families, yet ignores abuse within its own walls. And in their warped sense of morality, we represent more of a threat than anything else out there.
