Conservative’s fantasies are out of control. Author of SB 777 responds to misinformation about student civil rights legislation.

State Sen. Sheila Kuehl (D) – from Santa Monica – is responding to the misleading information being spread about Senate Bill 777.

SB 777 requires the California Department of Education to monitor the way schools adhere to the state’s anti-bias laws and specifically mandates the department to ensure the protection of LGBT students.

Right-wing press and leaders of conservative groups say the legislation orders public schools to allow boys and girls to use the same restrooms and locker-rooms.

One dramatic conservative said, “Arnold Schwarzenegger has delivered young children into the hands of those who will introduce them to alternative sexual lifestyles. This means children as young as five years old will be mentally molested in school classrooms.”

Senator Kuehl (pictured) – who authored the bill – says it clarifies and consolidates a 1999 California law that bans sexual discrimination in schools. The amended bill adds “gender” to the list of traits protected from discrimination.

USA Today reports that she says the law makes no mention of bathrooms and will not open the locker-room doors to gender mixing.
