Hi - I am donor-conceived via an anonymous sperm donor and write in support of gay parenting though raised by a heterosexual couple. I love my parents deeply but they kept the truth of my conception a secret until my 20s causing great loss and shame. I believe gay and lesbian parents, unable to hide the lack of at least one biological parent naturally have a more open and functional approach to parenting donor-conceived children. While their children may still feel loss it is not shrouded in secrecy and shame. In many ways I believe these parents can show others the way.
I'm not against artificial insemination or any other assisted reproduction but I do adamantly oppose anonymous sperm and egg donation. I believe everyone has a right to know the identity of their biological parents and genetic heritage. Knowingly denying them such is betrayal. "Knowing the identity" of their genetic parent does not, however, mean they must be raised by the individual.
I write about my experience on my blog "Connect It" - found at http://connectitblog.blogspot.com. I also write for Technorati under "Girl Conceived" about reproductive technology and issues.
