The Huffington Post has named GLSEN Board Member Sirdeaner Walker its Greatest Person of the Day. Since the loss of her son two years ago, Sirdeaner has been an outspoken advocate for the Safe Schools Improvement Act, a federal anti-bullying bill that includes explicit protections for bullying based on sexual orientation and gender identity, among other personal characteristics. When Sirdeaner Walker found out her son was being bullied and called homophobic slurs, she told his school about it.
Hillary Clinton reaches out via video to young people who are contending with homophobic peers, by saying, "First of all, hang in there and ask for help. Your life is so important - to your family, your friends, and to your country. And there is so much waiting for you, both personally and professionally - there are so many opportunities for you to develop your talents and make your contributions."
CNN.com profiles a family, from Dunaire, Georgia, who has suffered from school bullies. Eleven-year-old Jaheem Herrera hung himself, after he was perpetually called "gay" at school.
Jaheem's mom told CNN: "He used to say Mom they keep telling me this ... this gay word, this gay, gay, gay. I'm tired of hearing it, they're telling me the same thing over and over."
But while she says her son complained about the bullying, she had no idea how bad it had gotten.
Mark A. Perigard gives a positive review of Prayers for Bobby, a new Lifetime movie which explores the true story of a homophobic mother who discovers her son is gay. It's based on a book of the same title by Leroy Aarons.
