Here's a complete list (so far) of U.S. mayors who support Freedom to Marry. The statement the group signed includes: "As mayors of great American cities, we proudly stand together in support of the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. We personally know many gay and lesbian people living in our cities who are in committed, loving relationships, who are active participants in the civic life of our communities, and who deserve to be able to marry the person with whom they share their life..."


San Diego Padres pledge support for LGBT youth in sports

Players on the San Diego Padres team have accepted GLSEN's challenge to stop name-calling and/or using language that puts down others because of differences like sexual orientation and gender expression. By taking GLEN's challenge, the Padres hope to encourage youth to follow their example by avoiding harmful language and by treating all team members with respect. The Padres are the first professional sports team to sign the Team Respect pledge.


California school bans sixth grader's Harvey Milk presentation

A San Diego-area sixth-grader's report on Harvey Milk was not welcomed by the school's principal, the L.A. Times reports:


Family makes a difference. Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders had a change of heart about gay marriage.

Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders cited his daughter as the main reason for reversing an earlier decision about a significant step for lesbians and gay men. Then he signed a City Council resolution supporting a challenge to California's gay marriage ban.

“I've decided to lead with my heart, which is probably obvious right now, to do what I think is right and to take a stand on behalf of equality and social justice,” Sanders explained with surging emotion, while taking his new position during a press conference Wednesday.


Celebrate Pride in San Diego with "Family Matters".

The San Diego Pride parade is Saturday, July 21 and starts at 11:00 AM. Please watch the parade or walk with other families behind the LGBT Community Center's float.

You should also join Family Matters in The Children's Garden. The Garden will be open on Saturday from 12:00 - 6:00 pm, and on Sunday from 11:00 - 6:00 pm.
