Gov. Martin O'Malley (pic) says legalizing gay marriage in Maryland is a matter of protecting children. O'Malley said his proposed bill will offer certain legal protections to children of gay couples, providing parity with children of married, heterosexual parents. He testified before the Senate Judicial Proceeding Committee. Last year, the Senate passed a version of the bill, but it stalled in the House over a few legislators' religious beliefs.

First-year college students' political and social views continue to shift in a progressive direction. An unprecedented 71.3 percent of incoming college students indicated that same-sex couples should have the right to legal marital status, compared with 64.9 percent in 2009, according to the 2011 CIRP Freshman Survey, which is based on the responses of more than 200,000 first-time full-time students entering four-year colleges across the country.
A battle over whether child-placement agencies should be allowed to discriminate against prospective parents and children based on their sexual orientation has moved to Virginia's General Assembly. Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, has introduced legislation that would bar Virginia from contracting with or funding agencies that discriminate against children or otherwise eligible prospective foster or adoptive parents solely on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, family status, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
A growing body of research coming out of San Francisco State University's Family Acceptance Project, has shown that by choosing to accept their GLBT children, families can make a profound difference in the lives of our youth. For example, youth who experience greater family acceptance report lower levels of depression, and are far less likely to attempt suicide, use illegal drugs, or have unprotected sex.
