New York City clerk required to educate public about marriage equality

Same sex marriages performed elsewhere are recognized as valid marriages by the state of New York.


Notre Dame football star takes stand against homophobia

The Chicago Tribune recently ran a piece on Notre Dame's new quarterback Dayne Crist [pictured], and his support for bringing attention to homophobia. Crist participated in a week on campus dedicated to ending hate against GLBT people by wearing a t-shirt with the slogan: StaND Against Hate.


Father-to-be Neil Patrick Harris wins two Emmys

Neil Patrick Harris won two Emmy Awards at Saturday night’s creative arts ceremony. The AP reports that Harris won awards for best guest actor in a comedy series, for his appearance on Glee, and for his work as host of The Tony Awards show, which was named best special class program. The creative arts ceremony is a precursor to the August 29 primetime show.


Marriage equality gaining acceptance in opinion polls

Americans are opening their minds about gay rights, and they have become more accepting of marriage equality. According to Forbes.com, Gallup asks its survey question this way: "Do you think marriages between same-sex couples should or should not be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages? In May 44% (up from 27% when Gallup first asked the question in 1996) said they should be recognized as valid.


Catholic adoption agency cannot bar gay parents from service

The UK-based agency called Catholic Care sought exclusion from 2007 sexual orientation regulations and began legal action to change its constitution - so it could work with married couples only. But it lost the attempt to restrict its service to heterosexual couples after the Charity Commission found there is no justification for barring lesbian and gay parents.


German court rules gay couples entitled to equal treatment on inheritance tax

Germany's highest court has ruled that gay couples in civil partnerships are entitled to the same inheritance tax rules as married heterosexual couples. The AP reports the Federal Constitutional Court decided in favor of two homosexual plaintiffs after each had lost their partner and contested rules under which they had to pay inheritance tax as if they were distant relatives of the deceased.


Mexico supreme court upholds adoptions by gay parents

Mexico's Supreme Court voted to uphold a Mexico City law allowing adoptions by same-sex couples. The AP reports that justices voted 9-2 against challenges presented by federal prosecutors who had argued the law fails to protect adoptive children against possible ill effects or discrimination, or to guarantee their rights to a traditional family.
