Here's a complete list (so far) of U.S. mayors who support Freedom to Marry. The statement the group signed includes: "As mayors of great American cities, we proudly stand together in support of the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. We personally know many gay and lesbian people living in our cities who are in committed, loving relationships, who are active participants in the civic life of our communities, and who deserve to be able to marry the person with whom they share their life..."


Houston's 'Freedom to Marry Day'

In a letter declaring Feb. 14, 2011 Freedom to Marry Day, Houston's Mayor Annise Parker said Valentine’s Day is bittersweet and she hopes the day comes when she’ll be allowed to marry her life partner of 20 years.

According to a recent poll by Equality Texas, 63% of Texans now support allowing gay couples to get a civil union.


Houston elects lesbian mom for mayor

City Controller - and lesbian mom - Annise Parker made history Saturday by being elected Houston's first openly gay mayor, earning 53.6 percent of the vote in a tight race.

Parker and her partner, Kathy Hubbard, have been together since 1990. They have two adopted children.
