As President Obama visits Hawaii, CNN has highlighted a Hawaiian lesbian couple that will legally celebrate a civil union January 1st, but they'd rather receive federal marriage benefits that do not apply to same-sex couples. The White House correspondent delivering the story insinuated President Obama could gain votes if he legalizes same-sex marriage. Less than a year after the push for civil unions was vetoed, Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed into law a bill legalizing civil unions and making Hawaii the seventh state to grant such privileges to same-sex couples.
"As support for legal gay marriage has grown, along with the body of research that shows same-sex parents to be just as committed, so, too, has the acceptance of gay parenthood," says Adam Pertman, executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, in NYC. There's a growing number of same-sex parents in America today: between 1.5 million and 5 million, according to rough U.S. Census estimates, up from 300,000 to 500,000 in 1976. Children with same-sex parents should be prepared for questions from strangers and classmates. Some people may question the validity of their family.
CNN weekend anchor Don Lemon [pic] came out of the closet to NPR, with CNN's approval this weekend. Now he's a role model for gay teens who watch his work on TV because they often look for people like themselves on television.
Colleagues at CNN know about his four-year relationship with a CNN producer. But until now, Lemon has been extremely guarded with the public. He said he was told that anchors do not talk about such things.
Public comments received by CNN regarding "Gary and Tony Have a Baby" range from supportive to disenchanted. "Whether they are gay as a couple, or gay as a single parent -- as long as they love and nourish that child it will make absolutely no difference. Compared to the atrocious things that we read here on CNN about what parents do to their children, being raised by a gay parent will be a blessing," says one reader.
CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien is covering the story of two gay men and their struggles to become fathers. This one hour documentary is to air on CNN on Thursday June 24, 2010 at 8pm and on CNN International on Saturday June 26, 2010 at 8am, and follows Gary Spino and Tony Brown through all of the struggles they have trying to have a child that is biologically and legally connected to them.
Anderson Cooper may bring home a Haitian orphan and raise the child with his boyfriend.
According to Gawker, The National Enquirer says Cooper and his boyfriend will both adopt a baby.
"The death and destruction in Haiti made Anderson realize what's really important. He and Ben have decided to become dads," a longtime friend to the Enquirer.
