Senator Mark Leno hopes the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act has more support during its second attempt to get passed. FAIR would require public school materials to include the historical contributions of gay people as a way to fight bullying. It's similar to a bill approved by the CA legislature in '06 but vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger.
California Gov. Schwarzenegger signed a bill striking down the state's long-ignored mandate to search for the cure of homosexuality. By doing so, he ended a 60-year plan that began in 1949 when a male pedophile molested and murdered a six-year-old girl. The event led to lawmakers requiring mental health officials to figure out why pedophiles prey on children.
The AP reports that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he wants the state to begin handing out marriage licenses immediately. State Attorney General Jerry Brown agrees. Both politicians agree with a federal judge's ruling that struck down the state's gay marriage ban. The judge will now decide whether to allow same-sex marriages to proceed.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Sunday expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already wed would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.
"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," Schwarzenegger said in an interview Sunday on CNN. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."
