At the Democratic National Convention, delegates voted to approve a platform that includes marriage equality. This follows President Obama's announcement in May that he supports same-sex marriage.
President Obama's campaign is now on the record against North Carolina's hateful Amendment One, which would define marriage as "between one man and one woman" and ban recognition of same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships. His campaign issued a statement saying the amendment was discriminatory.
From President Obama's speech to the UN General Assembly recently: "And to make sure our societies reach their potential, we must allow our citizens to reach theirs... No country should deny people their rights, the freedom of speech and freedom of religion, but also no country should deny people their rights because of who they love, which is why we must stand up for the rights of gays and lesbians everywhere. And no country can realize its potential if half its population cannot reach theirs. This week, the United States signed a new Declaration on Women’s Participation.
In a recent OP-ED in the Boston Globe by Sen. John Kerry he says, "Pundits ask whether President Obama can afford to 'change’ his position on gay marriage. It’s a phony debate about a real issue".
