At a recent campaign event at a boarding school in New Hampshire, GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum did the Christian thing by telling kids, at least three of which had gay parents themselves, that they’d be better off with parents in prison. The LA Times reports, “For the second time in as many days, Rick Santorum waded into the issue of gay marriage, suggesting it was so important for children to have both a father and mother that an imprisoned father was preferable to a same-sex parent.” Of course we all know, and ThinkProgress reports, “…studies have consistently shown that same-sex couples are just as capable of raising children as opposite-sex couples, and any attempt to suggest otherwise is not only wrong but hurtful to same-sex families and the children they are raising.”
Native Iowan and the host of Iowa Outdoors on Iowa Public Television, Scott Siepker, created a video dispelling some of the common stereotypes about Iowa. “The main objective was just to make people laugh,” Siepker, 29, said. The video, titled “Iowa Nice,” does have more serious purposes as well. Because there is no Democratic challenger for President Barack Obama, a one-sided perspective of Iowans is being highlighted with the national media in town for the first-in-the-nation caucuses, Siepker said. “The ideal outcome is to get people to know Iowa as it is, and not what you think it is,” said Siepker, whose favorite stereotypes are that Iowans are all just a bunch of hillbillies and that Iowa is where all the potatoes come from.
