Potty training for a now 14-month-old boy

When we began our potty-training journey a few weeks back, my son and I started with the adult-sized toilet. For those of you who are about to begin this journey...don't start with this toilet. We had some success, however, despite his screams as I placed his bottom on the cold, white seat. My mom suggested that I purchase a kiddy toilet, intimating that he might be afraid of the larger one. I stepped back, looked at the giant and realized that our super flusher toilet is rather ominous. It's tall, contains water that briefly disappears and sometimes smells. Hmmm. Okay. While shopping at Babies R Us for supplies, we looked at kiddy toilets. I pulled one off the shelf and placed it on the ground. I placed my son on the toilet and he laughed with excitement; perhaps, he thought it was a chair designed just for him. Little did he know it was a throne. In any case, we purchased that toilet. Since then, we go to "potty" once every two to three hours. He sits for about 10 to 30 seconds and viola...pee and occasionally a poop.

Hey M&M - We started Natalie the same time and people who have multiple kids and like to "suggest" so many upbringing ideas, thought we were insane to even think about doing so. She is doing very well on it. The very first time she sat their she peed, stood up and then clapped. I was shocked! Ever since then, she tells us when she feels like it and makes her way to the restroom. She may be doing the same as your son as far as the amount of times per day (it just varies). What I dont understand is why she ask for a book everytime she sits there...hmmm.

I NEVER read on the pot, but I found that if I give Christopher something (e.g., book, toy) while he sits, he gets down to business. Christopher has clued in that the potty/toilet is for going potty, and will go 75% of the time we sit. He still goes in his diaper, too. He hasn't clued in on saying, "daddy, potty," yet. I am hopeful.

Sounds like Natalie is ahead of the game, but then girls usually are!

My son was a week shy of 14 mos. when he started showing he wanted to use the potty. I let him, and hes been going #1 & #2 in his lil potty. Hes still in diapers at daycare but as soon as we get home hes in underwear. I think all it takes is following through and keep taking the child potty. But dont force them if theyre not ready.

My son was a week shy of 14 mos when he showed us he wanted to potty. He wears diapers at daycare, but underwear at home. I take him every hour to potty and he has been going #1 & #2 in his lil potty. He has only wet his underwear once in the 2 weeks ive been working with him.
But it depends on us to be faithful on taking them, you just cant force them to potty if they dont want to. Because then they wont want to go anymore.
