Where do I start?

Hello everybody I am new here. Not only to this site but to the whole idea of parenting. My partner and I have been together for 14 years and just had our Civil Union a few months ago. I had talked about children in the past but things never went anywhere. It just always seemed like a pipe dream, somthing that could not happen. Now we BOTH are talking about it. To be honest, we could use all the advice anybody could offer. We know nothing about the process or even where to start.
