A group called FreedomOhio has been working for a year on a ballot issue that would repeal Ohio's marriage ban implemented in 2004, while preserving the right of religious institutions not to perform or recognize such marriages.
Ian James, FreedomOhio's co-founder, said he is "99.8 percent certain" the group will obtain the 385,253 signatures needed to place the issue on the ballot - perhaps by this November.
However - believing it is politically too soon to make the challenge - the Ohio Democratic Party has not supported a 2013 vote on the issue, neither has Equality Ohio - with more than 30,000 members.
