Two girls qualify to compete in Iowa HS State Wresting Tournament

The Iowa State Wrestling Tournament made news last week when two girls qualified. It was the first time any girls had competed in the 91-year history of the event. One of those teens is Cassy Herkelman [pictured] a 14-year-old freshman.

She had a 20-13 record at Cedar Falls High entering the tournament. But when Cassy was matched against a 16-year-old boy, the boy refused (citing religious reasons) and forfeited the match.

Herkelman eventually lost in the quarterfinals.

Cassy won the 105-pound class in the middle school division at the U.S. Girls' Wrestling Association national championships. The week before, she won at 103 pounds in the 6th- to 8th-grade division at the Girls Folkstyle Nationals. She was Iowa's 105-pound middle school champion in 2010 and 111-pound titlist in '09.
