CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien is covering the story of two gay men and their struggles to become fathers. This one hour documentary is to air on CNN on Thursday June 24, 2010 at 8pm and on CNN International on Saturday June 26, 2010 at 8am, and follows Gary Spino and Tony Brown through all of the struggles they have trying to have a child that is biologically and legally connected to them.
Gary and Tony both grew up in small towns where they were “subject to considerable ridicule and harassment for being gay.” However, in New York City they found each other, fell in love and married in Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. They also decided to dedicate the rest of their lives to the fight for equality.
After getting married, Gary and Tony wanted a family but found the cost of egg donation and surrogacy prohibitive. They were not able to use these services until a generous neighbor left them an inheritance. "The journey of Gary and Tony Have a Baby is a compelling story of a dream fulfilled that is unknown to much of America. Unlike most heterosexual couples who are able to have their own biological children, this gay couple faces remarkable challenges and overcomes immense obstacles to have their own baby," states Soledad O’Brien.
