I find this interesting since...

the actual report, which can be found online (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_23/sr23_027.pdf), mentions nothing about gays, lesbians or same-sex couples. The only remote reference is that never-married men are adopting. Yet, WebMD does state some specifics regarding lesbians and gays (http://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20080807/men-adopt-twice-as-often-as...). Hmmm.

When reading the report's discussion of results, the authors state, "More men than women have adopted children in their lifetimes. Among adopters, 17% of women and 6% of men were never married." The first statement was actually attributed mostly to men who adopted their spouses children. The second statement specifically refers to "never"-married men and "never"-married women. While I would like to think this number characterizes those who are gay, we cannot assume this to be true. There is nothing in the report to substantiate this assumption.

Sorry...

Can I just say this...

I am at a loss for words.

I just want to make sure I read this correctly. One parent gets jealous of the other's parent-child relationship, the marriage ends, and the jealous parent flees the country with the child. He then follows up with an EMAIL to state that his ex-husband will never see the child again. Assuming this is true... All I can say is...Grow up! Clearly, this parent has no idea what is best for his child.

Thanks for posting! I am

Thanks for posting! I am currently doing a paper for my ethics class and live in Colorado Springs. Do you ever do interviews or talk with students about the whole process you went through with your adoption. It would be amazing to have someone to talk to about all of this rather than reading all about it on the internet. Let me know if that would be something you might be willing or even open to doing. I want to be educated on all sides.
Thanks!
Foster Care

NEWS ADVISORY
NCD #08–553
February 13, 2008
Contact: Mark S. Quigley
202-272-2004

National Council on Disability to Make Recommendations on Youth with Disabilities in the Foster Care System

WASHINGTON—The National Council on Disability (NCD) will release its latest report titled, Youth with Disabilities in the Foster Care System: Barriers to Success and Proposed Policy Solutions, at a news conference at 1:00 p.m. February 26, 2008, at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 200 Independence Avenue, SW, Room 505A, Washington, DC. This event is open to the public and the media and free of charge.

The goal for our country’s youth is to live healthy, happy lives and to become self-sufficient, contributing members of society as adults. However, there are subsets of youth who cannot reach these goals with ease. These youth need additional supports to assist them in their journey toward a healthy adulthood, as they are more vulnerable than the “average” youth and thus are more apt to fall through the cracks during their journey. Youth development researchers have determined that some specific youth populations are more vulnerable than others. This report examines one exceptionally challenged group in particular: older youth (specifically, preteen through young adult) with disabilities who are in the foster care system.

NCD is an independent federal agency and is composed of 15 members appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. We provide advice to the President, Congress, and executive branch agencies to promote policies, programs, practices, and procedures that—
(A) guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability; and
(B) empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration into all aspects of society.

For more information, please contact NCD’s director of external affairs, Mark S. Quigley, at mquigley@ncd.gov or by telephone at 202-272-2004.

Joshua,

You're a very lucky young man; you have two dads that love you very much and were brave enough to accept your choosing them as your dads.

You're lucky, too, in that what we find today to be an extraordinary leap in family law, you will see as "the way it's always been." What a wonderful world you have ahead of you!

Best wishes to you and your dads!

Gene
