Iowan's will not vote on marriage equality any time soon

Iowa Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal said he intends to block efforts in the Iowa Legislature to refer a gay marriage ban to voters. Gronstal said he knows his stand against letting voters decide whether to amend the Iowa Constitution to ban marriage equality could hurt him with some constituents, but he was willing to take the risk. "I'm not going to put discrimination into the state's constitution," said Gronstal, a Democrat from Council Bluffs.


Boston gays, lesbians draw support from Catholic Mass

Boston's Rainbow Ministry of St. Cecilia’s Church opened its doors to nearly 700 people Sunday for a long-awaited Mass in support of gay and lesbian Catholics, ending a month of controversy over the Boston Archdiocese’s postponement of the service. A standing-room-only crowd, larger than Easter Sunday’s, packed the pews to hear a message of love, acceptance, and the forgiveness of sins. The congregation was encouraged to welcome outcasts as Jesus did 2,000 years ago.


Poll finds most in US favor marriage equality

A slim majority of Americans now support marriage equality, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. The results indicate the nation’s increasingly tolerant views about gay relationships and coincide with recent legal and legislative victories for gays. Five years ago, only 36 percent of Americans supported for marriage equality.


Gay ex-miner pushes for anti-discrimination bills in W. Virginia

According to West Virginia's Sam Hall [pictured], he attempted to play the manly man while at work in the coal mines, but other workers found out he's gay - and they began to harass him.

A lawsuit Hall filed against his former employer (a Massey Energy subsidiary) says he faced homophobia. Now, Hall is pushing for state legislation to protect West Virginians from discrimination based on their sexual orientation. Mr. Hall received taunts, threats of violence and vandalism to his car.

'Freedom for Marriage Act' introduced to repeal 'Defense of Marriage Act'

U.S. Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) Jared Polis (D-CO), along with John Lewis (D-GA) and Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) introduced the 'Respect for Marriage Act', a measure that would repeal the 'Defense of Marriage Act' (DOMA).

Community leaders were at a Capitol Hill press conference announcing the introduction of the bill.

Australian woman carrying child for gay brother

The Courier-Mail reports on one Queensland man's challenge to build a family. His sister is having a baby for him via surrogacy, and she was inseminated with anonymous donor sperm. The child will not have interaction with the biological father.

According to the news source:

Stephen Page, a partner at Brisbane's Harrington Family Lawyers and an expert on gay and lesbian law issues, said all surrogacy arrangements in Queensland were illegal.
