Dutch Catholics “de-baptize” to protest Pope Benedict’s stance against marriage equality for gays and lesbians

Thousands of Dutch Catholics want to leave the church in protest to its opposition to marriage equality, according to Tom Roes, whose website allows people to download the documents needed to leave the Church.

“Of course it’s not possible to be ‘de-baptized’ because a baptism is an event, but this way people can unsubscribe or de-register themselves as Catholics,” Roes told Reuters.

About 44 percent of the population in the Netherlands is not religious. Catholics make up 28 percent of the population and 18 percent is Protestant, according to official statistics.
