Nashville mayor says he will sign anti-gay bias bill if it passes

Mayor Karl Dean [pictured] said that legislation to extend the area’s protections of GLBT people “makes sense” and that he’ll sign it into law if the Metro Council approves it. A new bill would require city contractors to pledge not to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Nashville is known as a welcoming and friendly city and as a city that doesn’t tolerate discrimination,” Dean said in a statement. “The idea of requiring companies that do business with the city to adopt a nondiscrimination policy similar to our own makes sense. Nashville has a history of working through difficult social issues, and I feel certain we can do that again in this case.”
