This week has been very… unique. The kiddo “bob” went to a Child Find evaluation on Monday morning since everyone that met him has been concerned about his speech. Well it turns out that the fears are definitely founded, so I have to meet with them next week to work out a plan of action with them (assuming he stays with me). But what happened afterwards is what has really been interesting. I really don’t know if this was a direct result of the meeting, or if he is just feeling more safe or if it was just “time” but he seems like he has made some real personality breakthroughs this past week. All of them are very cool!
Monday night was when it started, of course, which is why I associate it with the child find evaluation. First, he told me his Elmo doll had to poop and asked me to change him. Considering he isn’t potty trained himself, I think this is a step in the right direction. Then he asked for Elmo to sit and have dinner with us. Ok, this probably seems like a normal thing for a 2 year old to do, but it was definitely the first time I’ve seen it, and he’s been with me almost 3 months. The rest of the week has seen similar new things pop up. Tuesday night while I was in a class he basically told my roommate that he had pooped and was asking to be changed. This came out in one word, but it is still a first! And then tonight, he put a lego-man to bed, and I’m not sure about this one, but I think he asked me if I was his dad. That one hurt a little. The TV was on and he asked who someone was and I said “it’s his dad” and he said something like “my dad?” while pointing at me. I told him I am his “for now” dad, though I doubt he gets the subtleties.
It’s really been astonishing just to see how much he’s warmed up in the last week, which makes me even more sad that I think he’ll be leaving soon. If things go as planned for his bio family, he will be going back home in 8 days. The house will definitely be a lot quieter, and I will be a lot lonelier, without him, but I am also confident that social services is doing what is in his family’s best interests. It will be very bitter-sweet if or when it happens.
In the meantime, we’ve got a busy weekend planned. A BBQ at the park and possibly a couple hours at the amusement park for tomorrow, and then a brunch Sunday morning. Food is involved with both, and since he’s like a stomach on two legs and gets tons of attention thrown his way, I am sure he’ll have a good time.
