We all want supportive and safe schools for our kids. But there are educators and administrators who may be uncomfortable around lesbian and gay parents. Although she/he may not be homophobic, the person at school could have some initial difficulty treating you like anyone else. Because we’re pioneers, we should expect some confusion – and make certain the school is safe for our kids.
You can help your child and enlighten the adults at her school by using The Back to School Tool, created by Family Equality Council. The guide offers tips for enrolling in a new school, meeting a new teacher, and entering a new grade level.
Here’s good advice from The Tool: Be proactive at school – don’t wait until something goes wrong. Reasearch shows that student success is directly related to the level of positive interaction between home and school. So be present from the start.
