Insemination

Lesbian families and single women increasing use of insemination. Could become largest group using donor procedure.

Because of legislation passed in late 2006, U.K. fertility clinics can no longer deny treatment to lesbians and single mothers.

Now the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has revealed figures that show the proportion of single women – and those in same-sex relationships – are seeking artificial insemination in large numbers. The number of single women undergoing IVF has risen 2.5 times over the last five years, and the numbers of lesbian couples having IVF has risen by four.

If the trend continues, the majority of children born in the U.K. – with the help of donor insemination – will be to families with no male partner.
